If You Are a Saint Louis Bluestocking: Where to Go to Get Your Fix   by Lisa Brown

If you’re feeling a little bit like an anachronism, if you find the phrase “teacher’s pet” appealing, and most of all, if you find the presence of books to be soothing to the point of being anesthetizing, then this article is for you. For those of us who think of navy blue hosiery when you hear the phrase “St. Louis Blues” here are a few of the choicer establishments where you can get your fix:

  • Left Bank Bookstore. A giant among the St. Louis literary scene, Left Bank Bookstore lives up to its reputation by inviting the great American writers (think Jamaica Kinkaid, Jane Smiley, and David Sedaris) to speak at its store. With its main store located in the Central West End (the other one’s downtown) Left Bank Books takes pride in being locally owned and operated, and has spearheaded several literary initiatives in its neighborhood. In the spirit of famous Parisian bookstores, Left Bank Books also has a resident cat named Spike.
  • Subterranean. Located on the Loop on Delmar, Subterranean has recently lost half its size but none of its influence. Here’s a sweet endorsement from yelp.com, “For something like twenty dollars we Gulag enthusiasts were able to find Solzhenitsyn’s unabridged, two-volume, five-thousand-page literary investigation…The loving title-page inscription to The Books‘ former owner…illustrates the human touch that lends Used Books their particular charm.”
  • Big Sleep. For those of you who love to sleuth their way through a good espionage, detection, or mystery novel, there’s Big Sleep Books on Euclid Ave. Featuring new, used, first editions and signed copies, the Big Sleep has unlocked the mystery of how to run a successful independent bookstore squeezed into the tiniest imaginable space. From Christie to LeCarre to Sherlock Holmes, you’ll surely find something to keep you up all night at the Big Sleep.
  • St. Louis Book Fair. If you firmly believe that one man’s trashy novel is another man’s Treasure Island, then the St. Louis Book Fair is for you. This 60 year old event will be held at the West County Center in 2010, beginning April 29th and running through May 2nd. The opening gala holds an auction of rare books. Gently used records, tapes, CDs, DVDs, videos, comics, graphic novels, and of course, books, will all be on sale throughout the event. Proceeds go toward local non-profit education and literacy programs, so you will be doing good while you shop.

If you’re a member of the St. Louis Bluestockings, fly that flag proudly and visit a local, independent bookstore. You’ll be in good company, in the company of books.

This American Life: Lies Sissies & Fiascoes

$18.98

With the rise of more and more forms of media, the American storytelling tradition has become increasingly fractured. Praise be then for This American Life, a weekly radio anthology of stories that never fail to move even the most casual listener. Lies, Sissies, and Fiascoes purports to be a best-of compendium, but at two discs there’s plenty more where this comes from. –Randy Silver…

Chicken Little [Blu-ray]

Chicken Little [Blu-ray]

$12.95

A classic fable gets fused with War of the Worlds in Disney’s Chicken Little. In the small town of Oakey Oaks, young Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff, Garden State) struggles to live down the embarrassment of having once thought the sky was falling. But when he gets struck again by a hexagonal, sky-camouflaged, hi-tech doohickey, he and his friends Ugly Duckling (Joan Cusack, School of Rock), …

Six Days Seven Nights [VHS]

The African Queen meets Swept Away in this sometimes labored romantic comedy by director Ivan Reitman. Fortunately, he cast an old pro in Harrison Ford, as Quinn Harris, a South Seas charter pilot who must ferry New York fashion editor Robin Monroe (Anne Heche) from one island to another–a hop that falls flat when they fly into a mammoth storm that causes them to crash on a deserted island. The …

Elf (Full Screen Edition) [VHS]

Elf (Full Screen Edition) [VHS]

$6.93

Elf is genuinely good. Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely fun…

Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business Of America

Who said of war, “When you get into trouble 5,000 miles from your home, you’ve got to have been looking for it”? Was it Bill Maher? Jon Stewart? Stephen Colbert? Nope; it was Will Rogers, whose good-humored pokes at politicians defined the 1920s and 30s and set the stage for today’s more confrontational Real Time with Bill Maher, The Daily Show, andThe Colbert Report. This through line is what ma…

“It’s a pretty grim world when I can’t even feel superior to a toddler.” Welcome to the curious mind of David Sedaris, where dogs outrank children, guitars have breasts, and French toddlers unmask the inadequacies of the American male. Sedaris inhabits this world as a misanthrope chronicling all things petty and small. In Me Talk Pretty One Day Sedaris is as determined as ever to be nobody’s …

Turds in the Punch Bowl is not your ordinary tale of friendship. Though unconventional in its material, this story is both hilarious and sweet. “My goodness, you’re certainly growing up. Getting so tall and mature. Why, you can barely recognize yourself from just a few short months ago—back when you were so young. Your body is changing. Changes can be scary. Especially for girls, and, gosh, it can be confusing.” Nope. No way. That’s not this book. This is NOT your mother’s coming-of-age manual. In the comedic likes of Chelsea …
